Serial Port not found

Hi

I have a Suunto Vyper, with an old Suunto serial cable. The cable looks like this with the connector coming off at right angles http://www.divematrix.com/gallery/data/ ... e-_-SW.jpg (not the straight one I see sometimes).

Of course I wont have that on a computer now! I have a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion.

So I bought this http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-to-serial-9 ... ptor-29968 because some people online said it will work will this Maplin adapter.

I installed the Mac drivers that came with the CD with this USB adapter.

I then installed the 64 bit drivers from here http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm (Mac OSX 2.2.18)

Restarted computer

But Mac Dive reports "No serial ports found". It was in transfer mode.

Do know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks a lot

In in the same boat as you - no serial port found, on one machine (10.9.1) and no new dives found (10.7.5) The cable is detected by the computer, the dive computer goes into data transfer mode. Did you resolve your problem?

Hi,

Did you just email me the same question? I'm assuming you're the same person. I replied to your email, but the short answer is that you need to install the appropriate USB driver for your device.

Yes I sent the email about the same time as this post, I didn't get a reply. If you replied perhaps it went into spam but I didn't see it.

Can you email me the reply again, assuming it was the "long answer"? Or reply here.

I thought I did download the right driver. But my Suunto cable is old, its a serial port I think, I had to buy a serial to USB adapter as stated, as I am not buying a new cable they are ridiculously expensive, plus the software, the adapter was only a few pounds. People online said that one works.

So should it work with this adapter? I dont know if its the adapter or your software/drivers.

Hi,

I didn't see your email. There are multiple people replying in this thread.

You will need to determine what kind of USB Chipset is inside your cable, usually the System Profiler will tell you this. From there, you can take a guess at what USB driver might get your cable working.

The officially supported cables are listed on the MacDive website:

http://www.mac-dive.com/devices.php

Other adapters should work fine, provided you are able to track down an appropriate USB driver. The closest I can find from a quick look through the comments is someone suggesting it may be a prolific chip. In which case you can try the latest prolific Mac driver from their website. Again I'd check the System Profiler to start with and see what it says when you plug the cable in.

There is also a third party prolific driver that some people have had luck with (for prolific devices, if that is indeed the correct chip), details here:

http://www.xbsd.nl/2011/07/pl2303-seria ... -lion.html

That contains terminal instructions, but if you read down the comments there is a link to another site that has a graphical installer, if that's more your style. Either way, with an uncommon adapter you will likely have to play around a little. Drop me an email if you get stuck.
