Running Macdive 2.3.6 on an iMac. Recently upgraded to Yosemite, no downloads possible the system says could not detect a valid serial port. Have just installed the FTB driver 2.2.18. Even though Apple is supposed to have its own FTDI driver.

It will not be /dev/cu.
Try reinstalling the driver, or at least rebooting. Sometimes it fails to start correctly.
The default FTDI driver that ships with Apple does not support Suunto. It is a lot easier to install the official one than for you to modify system files in an appropriate way.
