Importing

Post by bobbifrioli »

I love MacDive but the lack of a simple, easy import is problematic. I have over 500 dives in my physical logbooks that I would love to have in MacDive (vs. just new dives imported from my dive computer). I've tried the Python script Jurgen kindly did, but it doesn't capture some of the details I would like to have.

Is there any way you could create a template and include instructions on how to import? It would be such a lovely thing!

Thank you!

There isn't a great amount of detail here, so I can only give you a vague answer.

You say a "Physical" logbook. Unfortunately there's no way to do this. You also reference a Python script. I'm not sure how you go from a Physical Logbook to a Python Script, without typing that data in the first place (or I suppose using OCR) ?

If you're not aware, you can create a new dive manually. If you create a bunch, you can select multiple and edit them in one go. So dives with the same location or other details can be bulk-edited. Anything else that differs (durations, depths) is still going to have to be manually input at some point. It's somewhat tedious data entry, but if you have paper logbooks there's not much of a way around it, sorry.

You say there's a lack of a "simple, easy import". This is a little confusing, as it's quite simple to import dives from your dive computer. It's quite simple to drag/drop the various supported file types on to MacDive. I'm not sure how I could make that easier for you? If you're referring to bespoke user data, then sure, that's difficult. It is really not a trivial task to take arbitrary user data and import it sensibly. You don't even mention what format your data is in or what issues you have. However if you're having issues with a third-party Python script, I'd suggest you contact the author - I'm not familiar with the one you mention.

I'm also not sure what you mean about a template. Do you mean just a template of a file that can be imported conveniently? I can provide you with a MacDive XML file (in fact you can simply export one yourself from your own data and use that). It's then just a case of changing the various values.

Apologies if this doesn't help, I'm not really clear on the specifics here.
