== So, why not? ==

Dive computers have a limited amount of memory. Depending on the sample rate (the frequency at which your depth and time are recorded) and the duration of your dives, the total number of dives they can store will vary.

You can think of the memory being like a circle - once you get to the end of the circle and start back around, the older dives that used to be there will get overwritten. So the only solution is to ensure you download more frequently than you go around the circle. On a typical dive computer, at a default sample rate of 20 seconds, you can store roughly 40 hours of dives. If you increase that sample rate then you will not be able to store as many. Please note that some computers will be able to store less than this. Some can store a lot more. Usually your manual will give you some approximate numbers.

== But my computer says it has done XXX dives! ==

Usually a dive computer will also record the total number of logged dives and the maximum depth. This is updated when you dive, and always takes the same amount of memory - it's a very tiny piece of data. So the computer knows you've done X dives, even though it may not have the capacity to store all of them.

To back up or copy your existing MacDive data, located it in your Application Support folder. The full path is:

/Users/your username/Library/Application Support/MacDive/

Please note that in Lion, your "Library" folder is hidden by default. There are a couple of ways to access it:

To access this folder:

1. Click on the Finder in your dock.

2. Click on the "Go" menu at the top of your screen.

3. At the bottom of this menu, select "Go to folder.."

4. Paste in the following and press enter: ~/Library/Application Support/

Alternatively, click on the Finder. When your menu bar is showing Finder, you will see a "Go" menu. Hold down alt/option and click on this menu. Select Library from the submenu that appears. This will take you to your Library, and from there you can navigate to Application Support, and then the MacDive folder will be visible.

From here, you can either back up the whole MacDive directory, or you can open the MacDive directory to selectively back up files (eg, just your data and not your photos). The important file is "MacDive.sqlite" which contains all of your data. You may see other files in here such as original backups of any Dive Log data, photos, etc.
