Backing up your data
The simplest way to ensure your data is backed up, along with your other important files, is to use Time Machine which comes built in to OS X and will make periodic backups of your data as things change. There are also third-party backup solutions. Use whichever you are most comfortable with, but please ensure you do back up your data.

MacDive does not provide any built-in backup mechanism. There are plenty of dedicated solutions that specialise in this, and they will back up not only your MacDive log but all of your other important data.

Manually backing up/moving data
You may want to copy your data to a new computer, or simply take a manual backup for safe keeping. MacDive stores its data in the standard Application Support area of your OS X account.

Accessing your MacDive data
To access the folder your data is contained in, open MacDive's Preferences and go to the General tab. At the bottom is a button titled "Show MacDive Folder in Finder". Press this and a Finder window will open, displaying all of MacDive's files.

Alternatively, you can navigate to the folder /Users/your username/Library/Application Support/. There you will see a Folder called "MacDive". This can be useful in case you no longer have MacDive on the computer or can't open it for some reason, but need to access the data.

Note that on recent versions of OS X, the "Library" Folder is hidden from view by default. The following steps explain how to find it:

1. Click on the Finder in your dock.

2. Click on the "Go" menu at the top of your screen.

3. At the bottom of this menu, select "Go to folder.."

4. Copy and paste in the following and press enter: ~/Library/Application Support/MacDive

Copying data to another computer
Follow these steps to manually copy all of your logged dives and information along with your photos to a new computer.

1. Open your MacDive data Folder on the old computer.

2. Select all of the files and copy them somewhere that you can access on the new computer, for example a USB stick.

3. Open your MacDive data Folder on the new computer. Note that if you have never run MacDive on the new computer, this Folder will not exist. You can launch MacDive once to create it for you. If you have MacDive open, now is the time to quit.

4. Copy all of the files from Step 2 in to the new MacDive data Folder.

5. If you have used MacDive on the new computer, you will have an "empty" database. In this case you will be asked whether or not you want to replace the file "MacDive.sqlite", which will replace the empty one with your backed up data.

6. Restart MacDive on the new computer and your data, images etc should all appear.

What are all the files?
Inside your MacDive Folder you will see a number of files. The important one, your main data file, is "MacDive.sqlite". You will also see some other files with long names of random numbers and letters. These are intermittent backups that MacDive will create of your data at certain points. While you should retain these if possible, they are not quite as important and MacDive will function without them. They are generally created when MacDive updates its internal database as a precaution and as a way to revert to a previous version if necessary.

You will also see some other Folders like "Gear Images", "Photos" and more. These contain various images you've included.

The simplest and safest thing to do is to back up everything!

What about syncing over the cloud?
A good question! An update is coming shortly with built-in cloud syncing. This provides not only a way to easily transfer data between multiple computers or migrate to a new computer, but also another form of offsite backup for the worst case scenario.

Macdive:

If you are having trouble downloading from your device, please follow through these steps carefully.

Make sure you have installed a USB driver
First, ensure you have the correct USB driver installed. Depending on your device and the type of cable you use, this driver will vary. Please see the supported devices page on the MacDive website for a current list of supported devices and which drivers to use.

If your cable is not listed (ie it is from another vendor or is a DIY cable) then you will need to find out what chipset the cable or adapter uses and find the appropriate USB driver. Generally starting at the manufacturers website is a good idea.

Make sure the device is in transfer mode
Some models automatically go into Data Transfer mode when they are connected to an appropriate cable. Some, such as the Suunto Mosquito, require you to manually start transfer mode. Please consult your owners manual to find out the correct procedure.

Configure MacDive
MacDive attempts to guess where your dive computer is connected on the system. Sometimes other things can confuse it. Try going to Preferences -> Advanced, and clicking "Scan for serial port". If there are a few things in the list, you have to try and choose the correct one.

Some common ones are:

* /dev/tty.usbserial-ST000001    (Suunto, FTDI Driver)
* /dev/tty.usbserial-20030001    (Oceanic, FTDI Driver)
* /dev/tty.usbserial (Reefnet Sensus Ultra, their driver)

If you find there are other things in the list (Nokia modems, iPhones, etc) please choose a different serial port and try again. MacDive will retain this value permanently, so this step is only required once. A little bit of logic will help you here - "Failed connecting to dive computer on serial port "/dev/tty.Bobs_iPhone" is probably not your dive computer!

Error Messages
Failed to connect to serial port XXX
If you get this message, please read it carefully - if you see a serial port such as "MyiPhone" or "BluetoothModem" in the error, or something else that is obviously unrelated to your dive computer, make sure you have used Scan For Serial Port in preferences and picked the appropriate one. Of course, these are not always obvious - they won't say "MyDiveComputer", but there are some things that will obviously not be correct.

Failed to read header information
If you get this error message, the most common cause is that you don't have a good connection to your device. For some, it can be tricky to get the cable on correctly. Jiggle it around and try importing a couple of times, it is frequently the case that the cable is just not quite connected right. In some cases, it is very easy to plug the cable in upside down.

USB Hubs
USB Hubs can sometimes interfere with a connection. If you are having problems, make sure your device is plugged directly in to your computer, not through a USB hub.

Jiggle
Certain devices can be tricky to get connected properly. They may show that they are in transfer mode, but may still not have a good connection. The OC1 is a common example of this. Sometimes you need to try importing a few times and giving the cable a bit of a jiggle around to get things to happen correctly. Don't give up immediately - as silly as it sounds, this is a very common issue.

Low Battery
Make sure your battery is not low. Some devices will not allow you to download data if they have low battery. Note: some devices will go into PC transfer mode with low battery, but still not let you download. If you have low battery, replace it and attempt to download again. Sometimes downloads will intermittently work with low battery, but you will run in to issues so it is best to get the battery changed.

If all else fails...
99% of problems are resolved by other things mentioned on this page. In almost all of the support email received about download issues, something on this page resolves it. So if you are sure you have tried everything and you still have no luck, the next thing to do is test your device with the official manufacturer software.

This is the best way to rule out that there is no fault with the cable or device. If you can't download with the official software, then chances are it won't work in MacDive either.

Before contacting support, please verify that you can do so.

Device Specific Notes
If you have any tips for your particular device, please email support so they can be added here.

Atomic Aquatics Cobalt
When you go to enable USB mode under Settings, ensure you press select a second time and you see the green "CONNECTED!" text.

OSTC
Please ensure you are at the main menu. Downloads will not work from sleep mode, or from other menus.

Oceanic VT4
Ensure your cable is connected the right way - it is very easy to plug in upside down!

Oceanic Pro Plus 2, 2.1, 3
By far and away the most common problem with these devices is plugging your cable in upside down. It fits both ways, as with the VT4, but will only work one way. If you have problems failing to connect, then ensure your cable is plugged in the right way.

As of version 2.2.6, the method of downloading from a Shearwater Petrel has changed slightly. This was done to enable downloading more of the memory, and to do it much faster.
You only need to follow these instructions once, and then you can download easily whenever you need to. These instructions are specific to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, but they are similar on previous versions of OS X.

And now, by popular demand (yes, I finally gave in..) you can have your dives numbered. So, how does this work ?

Setting up for automatic dive numbering
MacDive will automatically number dives based on dive computer. So if you have two or more dive computers, they will be numbered individually. By default, each computer will start numbering from 1. If you want to change this, you can visit the gear screen and modify the starting number, then choose "Renumber", as illustrated below:

Your dives will be renumbered, and future imports will continue numbering from the highest number for this particular computer. This is a great option if you use multiple computers in MacDive and would like them to use the same dive numbers.

Manual Renumbering
You can also manually renumber dives. To do this, select the dives you would like to renumber, and then right click. Choose "Renumber dives" from the context menu, and you will be presented with a panel. It will default to the first dive number of the selected dives, and you have the option to renumber and/or recalculate repetitive dive numbers and surface intervals.

This can be useful to just number every single dive sequentially, or to fix gaps from deleted/merged dives.

Many of the fields in MacDive are self-explanatory, but some might not be quite so clear. Here are some explanations on how you can use the fields provided for each dive:

Tags - arbitrary keywords that you might want to use to organize your dives. For example: 'drift', 'muck', and/or 'training'.
If you are getting the message "MacDive failed to update its database. Usually this means you were using an incompatible data version. Please contact support." then there are two possible causes for this problem, both with simple solutions.

A very, very old bug
Back on OS X 10.5 (Leopard), there was a bug between MacDive and an Apple Framework. This was triggered by starting MacDive, and then not saving any data. After you upgraded to a newer version of the operating system, the Framework was missing some information it required. This information was only added once you entered some data - for example a site, or a piece of gear, or a dive. A workaround for this was added to MacDive 2.0.5, but occasionally there is someone who updates from an earlier and runs in to this problem. But don't worry - the fix is simple. You simply need to delete the empty data file and restart!

1. Locate and delete this file:

/Users/your username/Library/Application Support/MacDive/MacDive.sqlite

2. Restart!

As of Lion, your Library folder is hidden by default. See How do I backup my data or transfer it to another computer? for instructions on how to find it.

Please note: If you delete this file and it contains dives, your data will be lost. This particular bug only occurs if you have no data. So, if you have dives saved then this is most likely not the issue you are facing. The issue you are facing is described below.

Using a new version, and then trying to use an old version
Some MacDive updates make internal changes that are not compatible with old versions. This is generally fine, in the usual case - you have one copy of MacDive and it auto updates itself, and everything is good.

However, sometimes people have multiple copies of the application. After MacDive updates that make these changes (not all of them, but they are fairly regular), older versions will not work and you will receive this error.

The easiest way to fix it is to just delete all copies of MacDive that you have on your computer. Then, simply download the latest version from the website to make sure you are up to date. Your license and data will be fine, don't worry about them!

Syncing To Your iOS Device
MacDive supports syncing data to your iOS device running Dive Log, by MoreMobileSoftware.

The Overall Process
The overall process to sync is as follows:

* Enable Syncing in Dive Log
* Click "iOS Sync" in MacDive
* Once the two are connected and you are happy with the changes, press "Sync" in MacDive
* After the data is transferred, you can press "Use New Logbook" in Dive Log to accept the new logbook.
* Done!

The sections below cover this in more detail.

Initial Steps
Ensure that your iOS device is connected to a WiFi network, and that your Mac is also connected to the same WiFi network. You cannot sync without a WiFi connection.

When you've done this, you can click "iOS Sync" in MacDive, and enable syncing in Dive Log. You will then be presented with the sync summary screen.

The Summary
Once you've fired up MacDive and enabled syncing on your iOS device, you will be presented with the summary. It is recommended that for your first sync, you enable the "replace all information" option that is presented to you.

The summary tells you when you last synced, how many changes have been found, and provides you with some options.

Options
Replacing Information
If you select this option, then no merging will be done. MacDive will simply create a new database for your iOS device with its own data, and it will be replaced on the device.

Backup
If you click this button, MacDive will ask you where you want to save the existing Dive Log data. You can save it anywhere you like.

Restoring
If you hold Option when you click Sync, MacDive will ask you for an existing Dive Log database. You can use this to revert to an older backup if you have any problems. Also note: the first time you plug in a device and sync it, MacDive will retain a backup in your application support directory. You can use this option to restore that backed up data file. Subsequent backups must be made manually.

Playlists
You can choose whether you want to sync all of your dives, or just a particular playlist. Your choices here are remembered the next time this device is plugged in. This can be useful if you share your log with someone else and only want to sync your dives, for example. Any of your Smart Divelogs, plus the default ones, are available here.

Changes
When MacDive reads your Dive Log data, it will decide how it thinks it should perform the data sync. You can click on the "Dives" or "Equipment" tabs to review (and modify) any changes it is going to make.

Effective Syncing
When you perform a sync, you can click on the Dives or Equipment tabs to see what changes will be made. The second screenshot shows you the difference between an existing dive that has a modification, and a new dive that has no match in MacDive, and will be added to your MacDive database.

Dives are initially matched from Dive Log if the dive time is within two minutes of the time of a dive in MacDive. So to effectively match up your data, you should ensure that the dive time on your dive in Dive Log is close to the time you have in MacDive. This will ensure a match is found and the dives can be merged together.

If you think that changes are not correct (eg, you need to fix the dive time or there is some other issue) then do not click sync. You can either fix the issue, or if it is something you think is an issue in the sync process, follow the instructions for reporting an issue - take a backup and contact support with your Dive Log data and MacDive database.

In order for dives to be merged, you need to download from your dive computer *first*. Dives downloaded from a computer will not be merged with dives that have come from Dive Log. So the ideal process is:

1. Download from your dive computer.

2. Plug in Dive Log and enable syncing.

Data Incompatibility
As Dive Log and MacDive are developed independently, there are of course some differences in how they each work internally. MacDive does its best to work the same way, but in some cases it's not possible. Here are a few notes about some of those items. You should be aware that MacDive treats itself as the master source of information, and as such you will potentially lose data if you treat Dive Log as your primary source. You should pay careful attention after the first sync to what data is and is not synced. If you require specific data that is *not* synced, please get in touch (support@mac-dive.com) and let us know what you absolutely cannot live without.

For the data itself, in some cases MacDive has a free text field - basically you can type in anything you like. This same piece of data in Dive Log, however, may be limited to a set of choices. Obviously this doesn't translate 100%. In these cases, MacDive will check your value, and if it is a valid option in Dive Log, things will work as expected. If it is not, MacDive will always keep its own value and not overwrite it. So your MacDive data won't get lost! These are covered below.

Whenever a sync is performed, MacDive will create a new database on your iOS device, based on what it thinks is the "master" set of data. You may lose information that is not supported in MacDive at this time. A backup will be made before you sync the first time, should you need to revert to it. Be aware that there are fields in MacDive that do not exist in Dive Log, and vice versa. Information will be lost between the two.

Water Type
Some fields in Dive Log are limited to a predefined set of choices, while the equivalent in MacDive is a freeform text string. One of these is Water Type. The valid Dive Log values are: Brackish, Fresh, and Salt. If you have one of these values on your site then things should work as expected. If not, MacDive will retain its information, and Dive Log will end up with "Unknown". This will always be marked as a change. For now, you should either adopt these values or ignore the changes when you sync.

Entry Type
As with water type, entry type has two valid values that will sync correctly: Shore, and Boat.

Countries, Sites, Locations
Countries, sites and locations work very differently in Dive Log than they do in MacDive. At this time, they are only partially supported during the syncing process. MacDive does not record information about countries like the currency etc that Dive Log does, so this information will not be available.

Please also note: Due to the differences, Sites will only be synced with MacDive if they are attached to a dive in Dive Log. This means if you create a new dive site and don't add it to a dive (in Dive Log), it will not be synced.

Pressure Groups
These are not currently supported in MacDive, but are planned for a future update.

Finishing The Sync
Once you click sync, all of the changes will be committed to MacDive. A new database will then be created and sent to Dive Log on your iPhone or iPad. Once the transfer has completed, you will see a big green button appear in Dive Log, which says "Use New Logbook". Press this button to accept the logbook and your data will be up to date in both places.

If you do not perform this step, MacDive will have updated with any changes from Dive Log, but Dive Log will not see any changes.

Reporting Problems
If you have issues with syncing, then please contact support@mac-dive.com. Please attach your MacDive.sqlite file (found in /Users/your username/Library/Application Support/MacDive/MacDive.sqlite), and also please use the "Backup" button to make a backup of your Dive Log data and include that in the email. This will allow us to debug the data you are attempting to sync.

Some models store more information than others, even between manufacturers. For example, some air integrated Suunto models store pressure data constantly, every time a depth sample is taken. Others only store the beginning and ending pressure, not readings at the samples in between.

This page has been created to address some common queries and will be expanded over time.

Air Temperature
Some devices do not store the air temperature. In this case, MacDive will default to 0c/32f. They are (but not necessarily limited to):

* Atomic Aquatics Cobalt
* All Aeris Devices
* All Oceanic Devices
* All Tusa Devices

Pressure Data
Some air integrated models store pressure readings every sample, while some only store the beginning and ending pressure. The following models fall under this category:

* Suunto Cobra
* Suunto Vytec DS

You will see the beginning and ending pressure, but you will not see the per-sample SAC/Air graphs.

But Suunto Dive Manager shows the air pressure!
SDM simply interpolates this data based on the start/end pressure - it is not real data. MacDive chooses not to do this, so you won't see it.

Temperature Data
Some models of dive computer store the start and end temperature, but do not store the temperature per sample. This means you will not get a temperature graph displayed. The following models fall in to this category:

* Cressi Leonardo
* Mares Nemo
* Mares Nemo Air
* Mares Nemo Excel
* Mares Nemo Wide
* Mares Puck
* Mares Puck Air
* Suunto Cobra
* Suunto D3
* Suunto Gekko
Creating Gear
To create a new piece of gear, select the "New Piece Of Gear" from the action menu in the toolbar. You will be taken to the gear screen, where you can double click on the new piece of gear to edit it.

Deleting Gear
When you hover over a piece of gear, you will see an "X" icon pop up in the top right corner. Click this to delete a piece of gear. To undo deleting a piece of gear, press Command + Z, or select Edit -> Undo from the main menu.

Gear Groups
MacDive 2 lets you create groups of gear. You can easily add these groups, or have them get automatically added, to new dives. To create a group, select "New Gear Group" from the action menu. Now, you can simply drag and drop pieces of gear onto the group. If you would like to edit the group to rename it or remove gear, double click on it.

Adding Images
To add an image to a piece of gear, double click on it to open the edit window. Then drag any image onto the Image View.

Special Types Of Gear
If you change the type of a piece of gear to "Tank", you will get two new options - Tank Size and Working Pressure. These are used when calculating your Surface Air Consumption rate. Note - Working Pressure will only be enabled if you have your units set to Imperial.

Automatically Adding Gear To Dives
You can check the "Automatically add this item to dives" option, and the item (or items in a group) will be automatically added. There is one extra case - if MacDive downloads from a dive computer, the piece of gear representing that computer will automatically be added to the dive.

Disabling Gear
As of MacDive 2.0.3, you can now disable a piece of gear. In the screenshot below, the computer is disabled, and you will see a small lock in the bottom right of the gear item. Disabling a piece of gear allows you to filter out disabled items. For example, if you use rental gear or you sell a piece of equipment, you can then disable it so that it doesn't clutter up your list while you are trying to add gear to a dive.

Both the main gear screen and the Gear tab of the Dive Inspector allow you to check a "show disabled items" checkbox which will toggle whether they are displayed.

Naturally, MacDive can automatically assign your Diver to new dives for you when you download from your device.

The first time you perform a download, MacDive conveniently creates a new piece of Gear for you. It will be assigned to a new diver - something like Oceanic Diver, Atomic Diver, or Mares Diver depending on your device. All of your dives that were downloaded will also be assigned to this Diver. From here, you can edit the piece of gear and assign yourself to it:

All future downloads from this device will now be assigned to your Diver automatically.

After this first download, you may want to select all of the dives that were downloaded via the Dive Inspector, so that you can update them from Oceanic Diver (or whatever default diver they were set to) and change them to your own. You can do this in bulk by selecting all of the dives, opening the Dive Inspector, and changing the Diver under General.

Devices that store a name
Some dive computers (some Suunto's, the Atomic Aquatics Cobalt, etc) have the ability to store a name. If MacDive finds this name when it is first creating the piece of gear, then this name will be used instead of a default name. So a new piece of gear will be created, along with a new diver, and these will all be set for you.

Changing the name on a device
At this time MacDive does not modify your device in any way. You should use the official manufacturers software if you wish to change settings or update firmware.

* /dev/tty.usbserial-ST000001    (Suunto, FTDI Driver)
* /dev/tty.usbserial-20030001    (Oceanic, FTDI Driver)

When you go to enable USB mode under Settings, ensure you press select a second time and you see the green "CONNECTED" text.

OSTC
Please ensure you are at the main menu. Downloads will not work from sleep mode, or from other menus.

Oceanic VT4
Ensure your cable is connected the right way - it is very easy to plug in upside down!

Please read the Troubleshooting_Downloads guide thoroughly if you are having issues downloading from your dive computer. When requesting support via email, please describe what steps you followed in this guide and what the result was at each step as thoroughly as possible.

If you have tried everything there and still need help, then feel free to email [mailto:support@mac-dive.com support@mac-dive.com]. Please include as much information as you can - the more detail you can provide, the less emails we have to exchange to get things working! At the very least, the following information is extremely helpful, and usually necessary:

* Your model of dive computer
* What kind of USB cable you are using (official, third party, etc)
* What USB driver you installed
* The exact error message you are receiving
Please ensure you purchase the correct cable. You are using the incorrect cable if you receive this message:

<pre>
Failed connecting to dive computer on serial port '/dev/tty.usbserial-ST000001'

Custom Idea USB Cable
If you are using a Custom Idea USB cable, you may want to try this driver. There are reports that it is more reliable than the one listed on their website, particularly when using OS X Lion (10.7).

To back up or copy your existing MacDive data, first locate it in your Application Support folder. The full path is:

/Users/your username/Library/Application Support/MacDive/
Recent versions of MacDive contain a shortcut to this directory. Go to Preferences -> Advanced and click on "Open MacDive Data Directory".

To access this folder:

1. Click on the Finder in your dock.

2. Click on the "Go" menu at the top of your screen.

3. At the bottom of this menu, select "Go to folder.."

4. Paste in the following and press enter: ~/Library/Application Support/

Alternatively, click on the Finder. When your menu bar is showing Finder, you will see a "Go" menu. Hold down alt/option and click on this menu. Select Library from the submenu that appears. This will take you to your Library, and from there you can navigate to Application Support, and then the MacDive folder will be visible.

See also CNET's article for more information/solutions.

From here, you can either back up the whole MacDive directory, or you can open the MacDive directory to selectively back up files (eg, just your data and not your photos). The important file is "MacDive.sqlite" which contains all of your data. You may see other files in here such as original backups of any Dive Log data, photos, etc.

To copy your data to a different computer, you need to copy your MacDive.sqlite data to the new computer. Follow the same instructions, but be aware that if you have never run MacDive you will need to create that directory (New Folder from Finder). Alternatively, you can run MacDive once on the new computer, and then quit. The directory will be made, and you can replace the new (and empty) MacDive.sqlite file with your actual data.
4. Under General, change the selected site to your new site!

Alternatively, you can change the dive site for a dive by using the drop down menu in the main dives table, if you have included the Site column.

Creating new sites on the fly
If you are entering multiple new dives, it may be tedious to create the sites individually first. You can use this method to create and add a site to one or more dives.

1. Select one or more dives.

2. Open the Dive Inspector.

3. In General, under the drop down box for an existing site, you will see three boxes - Country, Location and Site. You can fill these out and click "Create New" to create the site and assign it to the selected dive(s).

If you then choose another dive, you will notice the boxes are still filled out. This is to allow you to quickly change the name of the site and add the new one to the next dive. This method is useful if you are entering a bunch of sites from the same area after a dive trip. For example:

* Malaysia, Tioman, Renggis
* Malaysia, Tioman, Labas
* Malaysia, Tioman, Bahara Rock

Since the Country and Location are the same you only need to change the site and click Create.

Starting a Download
When you initiate a download (from File -> Download Dives, or from the gear icon in the toolbar), you will be presented with the following panel.

Dive Computer
You may first choose your manufacturer and model of dive computer, or a type of file such as UDCF.

I want to import...
You have three options for downloading dives:

All Dives
This option will download everything from your dive computer. Any dives you have already downloaded will be duplicated.

Only new dives
This option will start downloading dives from your latest dive, and stop as soon as it finds a dive it has already seen. This is the generally recommended (and default) option as is often much faster to stop once an old dive is reached.

Any dives that have not been imported
This is a combination of the previous two options. Your whole device will be checked, but only dives that don't exist will be added. Typically you should use this option to recover from a download error or if you delete some old dives and want to get them back. It saves creating duplicates which you would then need to delete, as with "all dives".

Using the timezone...
This option allows you to set what timezone the dives were made in. By default, your current timezone will be set. If you return home from a dive trip to another country, you can choose the nearest timezone so that your dives will be recorded based on that timezone. The time will always display correctly, so if you aren't interested in the timezone you can leave it as the default.

Download Last
There is another menu option after Download Dives. This is Download Last. This option will perform a download using the last options that you set in the download panel. If you regularly download from the same dive computer with the same settings, then you can select this (or use the shortcut Command + L) to simply redo the download.

That's it!
When you've set your options, click "Import" and your dives will download. If you have any problems, see the Troubleshooting Downloads section.

MacDive typically does Dive Numbering on a per-device basis. Meaning, if you import from two dive computers into a brand new logbook, they will both start numbering from Dive #1. This means if you use two computers they are classed as the same dive, rather than separate dives. I use this all the time as I dive with multiple computers one every dive, and I want them all to be numbered the same as they represent the same dive.

But some of you like to number them all sequentially. There's an easy way to do this, although it's not entirely automated. You can create a new piece of Gear and set the type to "Computer". You can then add that to every dive via the Dive Inspector. Now, head back to gear, and you can renumber your dives in the usual way - but they will all be numbered sequentially for that one fake dive computer.

You can also set this piece of gear to "Automatically add to every dive". Next time you want to do this, simply head to Gear and renumber the dives in the usual way and all of your numbers should be updated.

Merging dives allows you to combine two or more shorter profiles in to one profile. A common situation is when you do one dive, but you surface for a brief period during the dive - for example, as part of a training session or perhaps you came back to the surface to collect something. Most dive computers will stop a dive and begin recording a second dive after a short time interval. Sometimes you may be on the surface just outside of this threshold, but you actually think of the dives as one dive.

If you look at the surface interval of the second dive, it is only 8 minutes. I'd like to just consider this one dive, so I want to merge the profiles. When I select them both and choose File -> Merge Selected, I end up with the profile below.

Note that the total duration includes both dives, and also the 8 minute surface interval (as the total time is a reflection of the actual time). You can also see how the profiles have been joined together. The core information (such as entry time, location, repetitive dive, etc) is all taken from the *first* dive, as it is assumed that you are adding extra profile data to the end of that.

The Site Management screen allows you to view and edit sites. You can see such statistics as the average rating for a site, the average and maximum depth, and how many dives you have done there. This is where you create sites that you can then add to a dive.

Overview
There are two ways to view and edit sites. First is the Thumbnail view:

This lets you view the sites as icons. The second way is a regular List view:

You can swap between these using the "View" icons in the tool bar (see Main Window).

Creating A Site
To create a site, select "New Site" from the action menu in the toolbar. You will be taken to the site screen, where you can double click on the new site to to edit it.

In the List View you can open the site inspector, or you can edit the columns in the table by clicking on the text.

Editing Multiple Sites
In the list view, you can select multiple sites and use the site inspector to edit them all at once. This allows you to, for example, bulk change the water type, or the country, etc.

Deleting A Site
When you hover over a site, you will see an "X" icon pop up in the top right corner. Click this to delete the site. To undo, press Command + Z, or select Edit -> Undo from the main menu.

In the list view, you can press Command + Delete (or File -> Delete Selected) to delete sites.

Adding Images
To add an image to a site, open the site inspector. Then drag any image onto the Image View.

Maps
You can use the maps tab of the Site Inspector to choose the location. By default, MacDive will use the Country and Location to try and determine where the site roughly is. Obviously it will not be completely accurate, so you can then drag the dive marker on the map to where the site is.

To be more specific, you can also enter the actual GPS coordinates into the search box to jump directly to the site, if you know what they are.

The main view
In the main area of the screen, you will see a nice blue graph and a table. The graph is your currently selected dive profile (complete with alarms and any images MacDive has found to correspond to this dive).

The table lists all of the dives you have selected, based on the current dive log or search. You can edit some of the columns in this table (the ones that are not greyed out) by clicking on the text and waiting a second, much like in any other OS X application.

To edit the fields that are grey, load the Dive Inspector using the button in the toolbar (see the toolbar section below), press Command + I, or use the menu item.

By default not all the columns available are shown in the table view. To view additional columns right click on one of the column headings and select the additional columns you want to view. You can also change the columns to view in the Preferences.

Sidebar
On the left, you'll (hopefully) notice a fancy old navigation bar. This allows you to move around the various areas of MacDive. It's broken down into a few sections.

Library

The Library contains the main functions of MacDive. Here, you can view all of your dives, or just recently imported dives (anything added in the last 30 days). You can also navigate to the Gear view, the Sites view, and the Sites Map.

Countries

This section is like an iTunes Smart Playlist. It is automatically built and maintained out of the list of countries that you have dived in. Whenever you add a new site to a dive, that country will pop up here and allow you to quickly filter your dives.

Date

This section provides quick links to your recent dives.

Divers

Much like the countries, this section is built out of the name of divers in the Diver column.

Computers

And another! Same as Divers and Countries, but based on the dive computer.

Dive Logs

This section contains your custom Smart Divelogs. For example, you can create divelogs that show all of your dives that were made in Thailand and were at least 20 metres deep, and rated over 3 out of 5.

Toolbar
Views

Some pages, like Sites and Dives, allow you to change the view. These buttons will be enabled if that is the case. For example, when viewing your dives, you can swap to the "Statistics" view to get an idea of your overall diving.

Actions

The gear like icon allows you to quickly create a new dive, new bit of gear, or new smart divelog.

Info

The blue info icon allows you to open the inspector. If you are on the Dives view, this is the Dive Inspector and will let you edit information about dives. If you have the Gear view selected, this will allow you to edit a piece of selected gear. The inspector can also be opened by using Command + I, or the menu item.

Search

This allows you to quickly filter the selected list of dives or gear to search for one or more strings. It works in conjunction with whatever smart divelog you have selected (if you're on the main divelogs view).

MacDive can try and automatically add your images to the correct dives. Provided the date/time settings on your camera match your dive computer, you can simply choose File -> AutoAdd Images from the menu, and choose the files to add.

You don't even need to select the images individually - select a directory and MacDive will read every file in that directory, and process all subdirectories for you automatically. This makes it very easy to bulk add images. Provided, of course, your camera and dive computer times match!

If the auto-add finds a match, you will get an image icon added to the dive profile too. You can click on this to pop up a little thumbnail of the image.

Non Matching Images
If an image can't be auto-added, you will get an explanation. Some images (such as site maps, pictures of wrecks) may not have a date at all. Or sometimes you forget to change your camera time and it's incorrect.

If the latter is the case, MacDive can help. When you are choosing a directory of images you may compensate for camera time based on a number of hours, minutes and/or seconds. You can also manually correct the images with an editor that allows you to edit the EXIF information of images.

You can also use "Add Image" from the file menu to manually add any image to the selected dives, or simply drag an image onto the dives view. Note that if there is no date time match, you won't get an icon on the profile but the image will be available under the Photos tab of the Dive Inspector.

* Atomic Aquatics Cobalt
* All Aeris Devices
* All Oceanic Devices
* All Tusa Devices

Pressure Data
Some air integrated models store pressure readings every sample, while some only store the beginning and ending pressure. The following models fall under this category:

* Suunto Cobra
* Suunto Vytec DS

* Mares Nemo
* Mares Nemo Air
* Mares Nemo Excel
* Mares Nemo Wide
* Mares Puck
* Mares Puck Air
* Suunto Cobra
* Suunto D3
* Suunto Gekko
* Suunto Mosquito
* Suunto Stinger
* Suunto Vyper
* Suunto ZOOP

A good question! For some devices (for example the Atomic Aquatics Cobalt, the Shearwater Petrel/Predator and the Mares Icon HD) you do not. However, for most, you do.

But I have a Mac, it doesn't need drivers
Indeed, usually things "Just Work" on the Mac. Unfortunately that is not always the case, and this is one of those times.

Yes, your dive computer probably comes with a USB cable to plug in. The trick here is that it is not actually a USB cable! It has a USB plug on one end, as you may have noticed. But it is actually a Serial cable. Most computers these days don't come with serial ports any longer, though. Which is why these cables have a USB plug - so you can actually get it to fit into your computer!

What this means is that while it will plug in, your computer still doesn't understand how to talk to it. That's where the USB Driver comes in. You need to install a driver to tell your computer how to talk to this cable properly, which in turn will talk to the dive computer for you and allow you to download your dives.

This is also why you'll see references to "Serial Port" in MacDive. It's all a little ugly and we'd all prefer it just plugged in and magically worked - but once you're set up you don't need to think about it too much more.
Troubleshooting Downloads
Please read the Troubleshooting_Downloads guide thoroughly if you are having issues connecting. When requesting support via email, please describe what steps you followed in this guide and what the result was at each step as thoroughly as possible.

Please do not email me with "It's not working! Help!". This is <b>mighty</b> unhelpful - please, at the very least, include the following information:

* Your model of dive computer
* What kind of USB cable you are using
* What USB driver you installed
* What error message you are receiving
Please ensure you purchase the correct cable. You are using the incorrect cable if you receive this message:

<pre>
Failed connecting to dive computer on serial port '/dev/tty.usbserial-ST000001'
Custom Idea USB Cable
If you are using a Custom Idea USB cable, you may want to try this driver: this driver. There are reports that it is more reliable than the one listed on their website, particularly when using OS X Lion (10.7).

When you initiate a download (from File -> Download Dives, or from the gear icon in the toolbar), you will be presented with the following panel.

Dive Computer
You may first choose your manufacturer and model of dive computer, or a type of file such as UDCF).

That's it!
When you've set your options, click "Import" and your dives will download. If you have any problems, see the Troubleshooting Downloads section.

Important Note
As most of these data files come from external sources (Suunto Dive Manager, Oceanlog etc) they are subject to change. If you have issues, please send a sample file to support@mac-dive.com along with a description of the problem.

Currently the Oceanic/Aeris importer is ropey. This is due to subtle differences between the output files that various versions of Oceanlog/Aeris create. Don't panic! Usually it's quick and easy to fix problems, provided you can send through the file that is causing your issue for me to look at.

Howto
Easy - drag and drop one of these files on to MacDive.

Alternatively, if you want to do it the hard way, you can select File -> Download Dives -> File Formats, then choose the appropriate format and navigate to it.

File Formats
Liquivision Dive Log (.lvd) Files

MacDive can now read LVD files from Liquivisions software.

Mac Dive Log XML

MacDive can read Mac Dive Log's XML file format.

Oceanic/Aeris .TXT Files

These files can be exported from the Oceanic or Aeris windows applications, if you would like to transfer your existing data into MacDive. Export them as CSV files (comma separated). You can then simply drag and drop them onto MacDive, or choose File -> Download Dives -> File Formats -> Oceanic (.txt) from the menu.

Shearwater XML Files

You can export data from Shearwater's software and you can drag these on to MacDive.

Suunto Dive Manager (.SDE) Logbooks

You can export an .SDE file from suunto dive manager by choosing Tools -> Export. Again, simply drag and drop this file (or use the download menu) to add the dives to MacDive.

UDCF Files

Again - drag and drop a UDCF file onto macdive, or use the Import menu if you prefer.

UDDF Files

Same as UDCF, you can drag and drop UDDF files.

Troubleshooting Downloads

* /dev/tty.usbserial-ST000001    (Suunto, FTDI Driver)
* /dev/tty.usbserial-20030001    (Oceanic, FTDI Driver)
* /dev/tty.usbserial (Reefnet Sensus Ultra, their driver)

(Please add your own device to this if you have a different one, it's a far from complete list!)

If you find there are other things in the list (Nokia modems, iPhones, etc) please choose a different serial port and try again. MacDive will retain this value permanently, so this step is only required once.

USB Hubs
USB Hubs can interfere with a connection.

Don't give up immediately - as silly as it sounds, this is a common issue.

If you have access to Windows and all of these steps have failed, you should try using the original manufacturers software to ensure that your cable is not faulty.
Why can't I download all of my dives?

Macdive:

So, why not?
Dive computers have a limited amount of memory. Depending on the sample rate (the frequency at which your depth and time are recorded) and the duration of your dives, the total number of dives they can store will vary.

You can think of the memory being like a circle - once you get to the end of the circle and start back around, the older dives that used to be there will get overwritten. So the only solution is to ensure you download more frequently than you go around the circle. On a typical dive computer, at a default sample rate of 20 seconds, you can store roughly 40 hours of dives. If you increase that sample rate then you will not be able to store as many. Please note that some computers will be able to store less than this. Some can store a lot more. Usually your manual will give you some approximate numbers.

But my computer says it has done XXX dives!
Usually a dive computer will also record the total number of logged dives and the maximum depth. This is updated when you dive, and always takes the same amount of memory - it's a very tiny piece of data. So the computer knows you've done X dives, even though it may not have the capacity to store all of them.

But I can see those dives on the computer!
Some devices have two different sets of memory. One set is used to display information on the dive computer itself, and only stores a little bit of data - the time, the maximum depth, the duration, etc. These are very small so large numbers of them can be saved.

Then there is a second part that contains the actual dive profiles. As the dive profiles can take much more memory (particularly with a small sample rate), you won't necessarily always have a profile for every dive in the first set of memory. The profiles will start replacing each other as soon as their part of the memory has filled up.

So in some cases, yes, you will see a lot of dives on the computer itself. But you may still only be able to download a small number of profiles.

At the end of the day, your best option is to download regularly. Especially if you use a small sample rate!

* /dev/tty.usbserial-ST000001    (Suunto, FTDI Driver)
* /dev/tty.usbserial-20030001    (Oceanic, FTDI Driver)

USB Hubs
USB Hubs can interfere with a connection.

Don't give up immediately - as silly as it sounds, this is a common issue.

If you have access to Windows and all of these steps have failed, you should try using the original manufacturers software to ensure that your cable is not faulty.
Importing from Data Files
